Hope Housing for Students, located at the old Maryvale orphanage on Graves, is a project of Maryvale and the Shower of Hope, a service organization assisting the marginalized of our community. We support Maryvale’s plan to refurbish one existing building to accommodate 29 single mothers, which is an increase from the existing 20 units.
They address the housing crisis in a concrete way, to prevent people falling through the growing gaps in profit-driven housing, and keep mothers together with their children.
Stand Up to Coordinated Opposition!
On Oct 8, hundreds of people showed up to oppose the renovation project. Driven by agitators spreading fear of homeless people, they were shouting to disrupt the meeting with their shenanigans, causing the Rosemead City Council to postpone voting on the issue.
The mob was assembled by a fear campaign spreading false and outrageous claims that the project would bring hundreds of homeless people to the area (addressed in the Staff Report).
The opposition are planning to show up on October 22, 5PM to get speaker cards, at Rosemead Community Center at 3936 Muscatel, on Muscatel and Valley (across from the Library and City Hall). We need to show up in greater numbers to voice our support for the proposed plan, which had been uncontroversial until the City Council meeting.

Information About the Existing Programs
The current housing is at this campus. There is no new construction for this change.
Maryvale was founded as an orphanage by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul. The site predates the founding of Rosemead. The projects involved with this current request for a Planned Development are:
Seton House – supportive housing for mothers escaping domestic violence.
Hope Housing for Students – student housing for women who are homeless.
Other programs include mental health services, a preschool, and housing for nuns.
The following videos were recorded at the meeting, where Jorge of Maryvale explains the programs:
